Every time there is ice and snow outside, I worry about someone falling down the stairs. The cannabis shop where I work is located in a strip mall with several additional stores. In order to access the building, you have to take the stairs to the underground levels. The cannabis shop is downstairs in one of the lower levels. When it snows or there is ice, the stairs are always slippery. The building manager does not hire someone to salt the stairs, and that can be very dangerous when the weather is subpar. A few days ago, there was a few inches of snow overnight. In the morning, the sun started to melt the snow and the stairs were very slick. One of my regular customers came to the cannabis shop to pick up an order. The guy had a small bag of pre-rolled marijuana cigarettes from the dispensary. On his way upstairs, he fell down the stairs and tumbled all the way to the bottom. He couldn’t get up off the ground and the security guard from the dispensary came to help. Since the guy had just left our store, he thought we were responsible for his injuries. I told the guy that I would be happy to refund the amount of money that he paid for the order as a courtesy, but I instructed him to contact the building manager if he had injuries that needed to be addressed. I knew it wasn’t our responsibility to pay medical bills even if he was leaving the dispensary at the time.
