My new love is cannabis

I used to be a tequila fanatic.

It was something I did with all of my friends in my 20s.

They were obsessed with getting certain tequila from all over the world. All of us weren’t worried about getting tequila with the highest alcohol content, as it was more about the flavor and the certain effects that each variety would produce. Nowadays I have the same mindset about cannabis that I used to have about tequila. I’m not concerned about finding cannabis with the highest THC degree, and that’s for a host of different reasons. First of all, THC is not the only active ingredient found in the cannabis plant. Some guess about CBD, CBG, and perhaps CBN and CBC, but who knows about terpenes like myrcene and limonene? Terpene profiles are certain to each strain and account for the different subjective experience compared to a different strain. If you take more than one different batch of one strain, one batch might have less THC but a higher terpene percentage than the other batch. For me though, I would rather take the batch with a lower THC degree if it meant more terpenes. The subjective experience is more enjoyable for me. Someone might hunt for a high THC level and pass up amazing batches of the same strain because they’re not thinking about terpenes. This is why I don’t chase THC levels with our cannabis purchases and would rather see a full lab report before buying something if I’m not able to see the products before I purchase. Sadly in our state you can’t open your jars of cannabis flower products before leaving the store, which makes seeing a lab report all the more pressing if you’re trying to find exceptional batches of marijuana.

Learning about cannabis

When I started smoking cannabis in the late 90s, there was still a major stigma around the plant.

I had to hide it from our parents even after I graduated from undergraduate school.

Only a range of our school friends used the plant in the first location, which is a far cry from the 2020s now that all of us have famous people being open about their frequent cannabis use. These afternoons you can get on the internet and in hours have megabytes of information about cannabis, its effects, and its long and assorted tale. But when I was first starting out as a marijuana smoker, everything I knew about the plant I had to learn from friends and acquaintances or from clandestine books. Some people might have heard about the Anarchist’s Cookbook and its infamy as a guide on amateur bomb-making, but it’s just one of hundreds of other popular books that were published by underground companies finally working within the grey areas of the law. My marijuana grower acquaintance first learned how to grow the plant from one of these books, and he purchased it at a head shop with his other books on cannabis. Although he works in a good marijuana market for a reputable cannabis producer, he cites the information gleaned from those books as his foundation in growing cannabis. One of those books was called the Marijuana Growing Bible, and I ended up buying a copy at one point. That’s where I learned about the history of landrace sativa and indica strains, along with the often forgotten ruderalis type of cannabis plants.

I was able to hide smoking this year

This year I will be spending most of the xmas season at our parent’s lake house up north.

  • They have several spare living rooms in the finished living room and consistently invite our siblings and I to stay for a few days for both the Christmas and New Year.

I generally enjoy seeing and spending time with our parents, but staying in their lake house can be genuinely stressful. My dad is always drinking a bunch and the crew of us like to pry in our personal lives and cast doubt and scrutiny. I don’t enjoy feeling interrogated at a family dinner, but that is normal in their household. On top of the uncomfortable feelings, they’re also severely anti-cannabis and have been for as long as I have been alive. Since I’m a weekly cannabis lover, it’s hard staying in our parents’ lake house knowing that I can’t bring any marijuana products with me. However, this year I’m bringing a few cannabis vaporizer pens with me because they have botanical terpenes inside instead of cannabis-derived terpenes like a full spectrum vaporizer cartridge. The latter smells just like marijuana flower products so you can’t genuinely hide using one. But with the botanical terpenes, your vapor odors enjoy candy or fruit. All I had to do was go to the powder room and exhale the vapor into the ceiling vent with the fan switched on. No one said a word and I didn’t gain any weird looks either. I drank with the rest of our family so they assumed I was simply intoxicated from the eggnog instead of being on a drug like cannabis.

It was a lot more money there

I’m happy to visit our good friend Travis next week.

He moved out west after all of us graduated from class and I haven’t seen him since.

When he invited me to stay with him at his home for a week and turn it into a mini-vacation, I couldn’t say nah. I had never traveled farther west than the Ozarks, so I was eager to fly over the rocky mountain range during our plane ride. Since it was an afternoon flight on a clear day, I saw a lot more of the mountains than I expected. Even though I had a layover that made the trip take 10 hours in total, it sure beat driving that distance instead. One reason for our trip was getting a chance to try cannabis from a recreational marijuana market. My new home state still lacks any form of legal cannabis, neither medical or recreational. So I can order CBD and hemp products over the internet, but they aren’t a fine update for traditional cannabis in our opinion. Therefore, I was happy to shop in a recreational weed store for the first time in our life. I was eager to try cannabis flower products, edibles, and vaporizer cartridges. Although the stock at the recreational cannabis store was impressive, the prices nearly gave me a heart attack. I was used to paying as much as $50 for an ounce of cannabis flower products on the black market in our new home state. After taxes, the same amount of cannabis flower buds from the recreational weed store was $79! It was phenomenal marijuana, but I’m not sure it was worth paying a 50% markup.

I love my sweets

All of these cannabis strains that cycle back to Girl Scout Cookies have all been winners when they’re grown respectfully

I am a cookie person when my self-control gives way to desires and sugar cravings. I can eat a box of chocolate chips in a single day so I don’t even buy them anymore. Why bring food in your new home that defeats your self-control in the first place? Although, cookies get the best of me when I’m at the store getting our essentials for the week. If there are sales on raw cookie batter I will consistently buy several packages. During the quarantine it was even harder to control our food cravings while I was finally working from home exclusively. Now that I am getting up every afternoon and driving to the office again, I can simply refuse the temptation of taking those treats with me to work. When I get home, it’s another story. Recently a different kind of cookie has me obsessed, and that’s the cookie cannabis strain. There are a ton of cookie strains that are hybrids of the famed Girl Scout Cookies strain. Mandarin Dream and GSC create Mandarin Cookies while GSC and Gorilla Glue create the strain known as Gorilla Snacks. You also have the famous Miracle Alien Cookies (MAC1), Pink Cookies, Sour Garlic Cookies, and Wookie Girl. All of these cannabis strains that cycle back to Girl Scout Cookies have all been winners when they’re grown respectfully. You can take the best marijuana genetics in the world and wreck them with bad growing techniques. It’s worth spending more money at a quality weed dispensary that is focused on stocking consistently fine products to keep clients coming back for more.

The delivery is different now

Back in the earlier years many of us ordered pizza with no additional fees from the restaurant.

  • You consistently expected to leave a tip for the driver, even though I only remember precious instances where there was a separate “delivery fee” tacked onto the total after taxes.

This all changed in the early 2000s as large pizza chains all started gathering delivery fees as a team as oil prices soared before and during the Great Recession. I stopped ordering pizzas by delivery except on special occasions as it was simply easier to option them up on our way home from work so our family could eat upon our arrival. That way you don’t even have to set aside money for a tip since they hand you the boxes of pizza over the table. However, I had no choice but to order our cannabis products via delivery for the first year that cannabis was legal in this state. The closest store was an hour away and I hated the traffic trying to get there. I would pay a small delivery fee and get our cannabis products brought to our door. But now that there are more retail locations around the state, this same cannabis dispensary’s delivery service no longer delivers to our area. Their store is 30 min away, but it has horrendous parking due to its exact location downtown. At a certain timeframe I couldn’t justify the time it would consume out of our day just to stop at a dispensary that was already slipping on the quality of its products in the first location. This cannabis dispensary lost a lot of high end clients when they rolled back much of their cannabis delivery services.

The oils and mimicking flavors

I don’t need to understand the complex medical process that goes into making the medications I take on a week to week basis as long as I can trust that they’re safe.

Not in the sense of being free of side effects, but without any lingering solvents or chemicals left-over from the laboratory.

Otherwise a batch of medication could make someone with bad health even sicker. No doubt the manufacturer would get hit with a sizable class action lawsuit, so they have every reason to go to any expense to make sure their drugs are pure before they’re given. I just wish that the cannabis industry was the same, regardless of whether or not you’re shopping with a medical cannabis card or just recreational. Oftentimes I get batches that smell a little bit like mold despite the lab reports claiming otherwise. The worst are the marijuana oils that enjoy distillate syringes and vaporizer cartridges. You might see the strain OG Kush on the packaging, but in fact it’s distillate extracted from any random strain in the grow room and botanical terpenes are added to “simulate” or “mimic” the terpene profile of OG Kush or whatever strain they sell it as. If you ask a neophyte they will claim that all you have left after distillation is just THC, which is an oversimplification of the truth. There are plenty of trace amounts of CBD and CBG that can be plentiful enough to be statistically significant. A single strain of cannabis is characterized by a complex mix of different terpenes and cannabinoids present in its makeup. The ratios between all of these constituents is crucial, and therefore the idea “simulating” these strains with half a dozen botanical terpenes is ridiculous. Try them if you don’t think the warnings, then go find a full spectrum cannabis concentrate to compare to the marijuana oil.

You know you have OG Kush

When I first started getting weed around 17 years old, I wasn’t blessed enough to smoke unique cannabis strains. Everything was either low end skunk weed or something a person grew. Sensimilla back then was called “crip,” “chronic,” and “hydro” among other names. By the time I got to college, I started to find strain-unique batches of cannabis flower buds. I’ll never forget the excitement that I had when our acquaintance told me that he found White Widow. That night all of us smoked a joint and walked onto the other side of campus to see live music at the student-run restaurant. Months later were graced with a strong batch of Sour Diesel that made an impression on me about the possible impact of quality cannabis compared to the junk I had in high school. Now that I live in a state with a legal weed market, I see a lot of hybrid strains that are derived from OG Kush. The famous hybrid strain Girl Scout Cookies was made from crossing OG Kush with Durban Poison, while Bubba Kush a cross between Hindu Kush and OG Kush. It’s hard to find a fine batch of OG Kush in our state because a lot of growers will pass off an inferior cultivar as OG Kush when it doesn’t reflect the taste profile and effects of the OG Kush I got when I lived in California for a few years in the early 2010s. You guess you’ve got real OG Kush when you open the jar and smell the rich, citrus aroma of the flower buds.

The different strains aren’t ideal

Smoking cannabis was different around 50 years ago.

A lot of the best cannabis back then came from overseas.

You’d find Thai sticks in southeast Asia, kushes in northern India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and Gold-bud in North and South America. These “landrace” strains are either good sativas or true indicas and were used to develop the genuinely first hybrid strains of cannabis. While I have found new phenotypes of indicas enjoy Pakistani Kush, Hindu Kush, and Afghani Kush to be weak and not great, landrace sativas such as Durban Poison and Hawaiian are phenomenal. While numerous medical cannabis dispensaries carry Durban Poison on a proper basis, it isn’t consistently simple finding other quality landrace sativa strains. When our local cannabis dispensary started giving off Acapulco Gold and Columbian Gold recently, I was happy to try them both. Opening the container of each was a satisfying experience. The dank aroma of the flower buds was both fruity and dank at the same time, which I’ve been missing from some of these odd hybrids that are trending right now. I’ll take a hybrid if I can be sure that it will give me consistently fine effects. But more often than not, I’m upset by these lower end hybrids. My body is left wanting a better high. Hopefully I can keep getting more landrace cannabis strains moving into the near future. I saw numerous on moneus when I lived in California briefly, but the state I’m living in now is limited in its options of cannabis products by comparison. As long as I can keep getting Colombian Gold and Acapulco Gold, I’ll be blissful.

The seeds are key

My parents have told me a few stories about getting cannabis in the earlier years.

  • Until the ‘70s, there was no such thing as “sensimilla,” which is a name used to describe unpollinated female cannabis plants.

These unpollinated females would produce flower buds free of seeds and would then yield stronger effects. The energy once used to create seeds can go into production instead. But before sensimilla became popular nationwide, the batches of cannabis coming from all over the planet had lots of stems and seeds in them. Columbian Gold and Acapulco Gold actually had a gold tint to them and long, thin leaves enjoy you’d expect from a pure sativa. Nowadays most legal cannabis is grown inside so it’s a lot easier to produce batches of sensimilla without any seeds. But, this isn’t consistently the case as I have received a few bad batches of cannabis flower products in this state that were littered with immature seeds. If I’m going to find a seed in a premium cannabis product, I want it to at least be a mature seed that I can save for new home cultivation. So, the last few times I found seeds they were far from being viable for growing. Even if you talk to them about it at the dispensary, the best thing they will do is give you 10% off your next order. If you can’t trust the updatement product will be any better, why bother taking their slashed price in the first place? Getting a mature seed for a change would be cool, even though I doubt I’ll ever be that blessed. At least give me sensimilla if those are the kind of prices you’re going to charge. That’s at least what I expect from a reputable cannabis dispensary in a legal state.
