No longer a wine lover

I used to be a wine lover.

It was what I did with all of my friends in my 20s who were obsessed with getting particular wine from all over the world. All of us weren’t concerned about getting wine with the highest alcohol percentage, as it was more about the flavor & the particular color that each variety would yield. Nowadays I have the same mindset about cannabis that I used to have about wine. I’m not distraught with finding cannabis with the best THC content, & that’s for a host of unusual reasons. First of all, THC is not the only active component found in the cannabis plant. Some guess about CBD, CBG, & perhaps CBN & CBC, however who knows about terpenes care about myrcene & limonene? Terpene profiles are particular to each strain & account for the unusual subjective experience compared to an unusual strain. If you take more than 2 unusual batches of a single strain, a single batch might have less THC, however a higher terpene percentage than the other batch. For me personally, I would rather take the batch with a lower THC content if it meant more terpenes. The subjective experience is great for me. Someone might chase a high THC level & pass up amazing batches of the same strain because they’re not thinking about terpenes. This is why I don’t chase THC levels with my cannabis purchases & would rather see a full toxicity report before buying something if I’m not able to see the products before I pay. So in my state you can’t open your jars of cannabis flower products before leaving the store, which makes seeing a lab report all the more crucial if you’re trying to find exceptional batches of marijuana.

Learning about the history

When I started smoking cannabis in the late 90s there was still a major stigma around the plant.

  • I had to hide it from my mom and dad even after I graduated from undergraduate college.

Only a handful of my college friends used the plant in the first place, which is a far cry from the 2020s now that both of us have famous people being open about their frequent cannabis use. These days you can get on the internet & in tenths have megabytes of information about cannabis, its effects, & its long & assorted history. But when I was first starting out as a marijuana smoker, everything I knew about the plant I had to learn from friends & friends or from clandestine books. Some people might have heard about the Anarchist’s Cookbook & its infamy as a guide on amateur bomb-making, but it’s just a single of hundreds of other famous books that were published by underground companies finally working within the grey areas of the law. My marijuana grower associate first l received how to raise the plant from a single of these books, & he bought it at a head shop with his other books on cannabis. Although he works in a legal marijuana market for a reputable cannabis producer, he places the information gathered from those books as his foundation in growing cannabis. One of those books was called the Marijuana Growing Bible, & I ended up buying a copy at a single point. That’s where I learned about the history of landrace sativa & indica strains, along with the often forgotten ruderalis genre of cannabis plants.

Sneaking my cannabis in

This year I will be spending much of the holidays at my parent’s home up in the north. They have more than 2 spare rooms in the finished basement & consistently invite my siblings & I to stay for a few days for both the New Year & Easter holidays. I generally care about seeing & spending time with my parents, however staying in their home can be really stressful. My dad is consistently drinking a bunch & the more than 2 of them care about prying in our personal lives & cast doubt & scrutiny. I don’t care about feeling interrogated at a family meal, however that is normal in their household. On top of the odd feelings, they’re also harshly anti-cannabis & have been for as long as I have been alive. Since I’m a weekly cannabis person, it’s hard staying in my parents’ home knowing that I can’t bring any weed products with me. However, this year I’m bringing a few cannabis vaporizer pens with me because they have botanical terpenes inside instead of cannabis-derived terpenes like a full spectrum vaporizer cartridge. The latter odors like marijuana flower products so you can’t really hide using a single. But with the botanical terpenes, your vapor odors care about candy or fruit. All I had to do was go to the lavatory & exhale the vapor into the ceiling vent with the fan turned on. Nobody said anything & I didn’t receive any unusual looks either. I drank with the rest of my family so they assumed I was simply intoxicated from the liquor instead of being on a drug.

The changes in locations

I’m excited to visit my buddy Ryan next week.

  • He moved out to the coast after both of us graduated from college & I haven’t seen him in a long while.

When he invited me to stay with him at his home for a month & turn it into a mini-trip, I couldn’t say no. I had never traveled farther west than the Ozarks of northwest, so I was eager to fly over the rocky mountain range during my airplane flight. Since it was an earlier flight on a clear afternoon, I saw a lot more of the mountains than I expected. Even though I had a layover that made the trip take 10 hours in total, it sure beat driving that distance instead. One reason for my trip was getting a chance to try cannabis from a recreational marijuana market. My home state still lacks any form of legal cannabis, neither medical or recreational. Technically I can order CBD & hemp products over the internet, however they aren’t a nice upgrade for traditional cannabis in my opinion. Therefore, I was thrilled to shop in a recreational cannabis store for the first time in my life. I was eager to try cannabis flower products, edibles, & vaporizer cartridges. Although the quantities at the recreational cannabis store were impressive, the prices nearly gave me a stroke. I was used to paying as much as $40 for a good ounce of cannabis flower products on the black market in my home state. After taxes, the same amount of cannabis flower buds from the recreational weed store was $70! It was phenomenal marijuana, however I’m not sure it was worth paying a large markup.

Indica strains

A cookie is a cookie

I am a cookie freak when my self-control gives way to desires & sugar wants.

I can eat a box of nutter butters in a single afternoon so I don’t even buy them anymore.

Why bring food in your home that defeats your self-control in the first place? However, cookies get the best of me when I’m at the store getting my essentials for the week. If there are sales on raw cookie dough I will regularly buy more than 2 packages. During the virus it was even harder to control my food wants while I was finally working from home exclusively. Now that I am getting up every morning & driving to the office once more, I can simply refuse the temptation of taking those treats with me to work. When I get home, it’s another story. Recently a different kind of cookie has me obsessed, & that’s the cookie cannabis strain. There are a plethora of cookie strains that are hybrids of the famed Girl Scout Cookies strain. Mandarin Dream & GSC create Mandarin Cookies while GSC & Gorilla Glue create the strain known as Gorilla Snacks. You also have the famous Miracle Alien Cookies (MAC1), Pink Cookies, Sour Garlic Cookies, & Wookie Girl. All of these cannabis strains that relate back to Girl Scout Cookies have all been winners when they’re grown often. You can take the best marijuana genetics in the world & ruin them with exhausting growing techniques. It’s worth spending more money at a quality cannabis dispensary that is focused on stocking consistently nice products to keep customers coming back for more.

The delivery fees

Back in the earlier years many of us ordered pizza and wings with no additional charges from the restaurant.

  • You consistently expected to leave a tip for the worker, although I only remember scarce instances where there was a separate “delivery fee” tacked onto the total after taxes.

This all changed in the early 10s as major pizza chains all started adopting delivery fees in unison as oil prices soared before & during the Great Recession. I stopped ordering pizzas by delivery except on special times as it was simply easier to option them up on my way home from work so my family could eat upon my arrival. That way you don’t even have to set aside currency for a tip since they hand you the boxes of pizza over the table. However, I had no option however to order my cannabis products via delivery for the first year that cannabis was legal in this state. The closest store was an hour away & I hated the traffic trying to get there. I would pay a small delivery fee & get my cannabis products brought to my door. But now that there are more retail locations around the state, this same cannabis dispensary’s delivery repair no longer delivers to my area. Their store is 30 min away, however it has horrendous parking due to its exact location downtown. At a particular point I couldn’t justify the time it would consume out of my afternoon just to stop at a store that was already slipping on the quality of its products in the first location. This cannabis dispensary lost a lot of quality customers when they rolled back much of their cannabis delivery services.

The chemical aspect

I don’t need to understand the difficult chemical process that goes into making the medications I take weekly as long as I can trust that they’re safe. Not in the sense of being free of side effects, however without any lingering solvents or chemicals left-over from the laboratory. Otherwise a batch of medication could make someone with exhausting health even sicker. No doubt the manufacturer would get hit with a large class action lawsuit, so they have every reason to go to any expense to make sure their drugs are pure before they’re sold. I just wish that the cannabis industry was the same, regardless of whether or not you’re shopping with a medical cannabis card or just local. Sometimes I get batches that smell a little bit off, like mold despite the lab reports claiming otherwise. The worst are the marijuana oils like distillate syringes & vaporizer cartridges. You might see the strain OG Kush on the packaging, however in fact it’s distillate extracted from any random strain in the grow room & botanical terpenes are added to “simulate” or “mock” the terpene profile of OG Kush or whatever strain they sell it as. If you ask a neophyte they will claim that all you have left after distillation is just THC, which is an oversimplification of the truth. There are plenty of trace amounts of CBD & CBG that can be plentiful enough to be very significant. A single strain of cannabis is characterized by a complex mix of unusual terpenes & cannabinoids present in its makeup. The ratios between all of these constituents is key, & therefore the method “simulating” these strains with 1/2 a dozen botanical terpenes is ridiculous. Try them if you don’t know the warnings, then go find a full spectrum cannabis concentrate to compare to the marijuana oil.

New strains developed

When I first started getting marijuana in my school years, I wasn’t lucky enough to smoke particular cannabis strains.

Everything was either a low end brick weed which was referred to as “mids,” or you could get sensimilla weed that was regularly grown locally in a person’s house.

Sensimilla back then was called “crip,” “chronic,” & “hydro” among other titles. By the time I reached college, I started to find strain-particular batches of cannabis flower buds. I’ll never forget the wonderfulness that I had when my associate told me that he found White Widow. That evening both of us smoked a joint & walked onto the other side of campus to see live music at the student-run restaurant. Months later were graced with a strong batch of Sour Diesel that made a lasting effect on me about the possible impact of quality cannabis compared to the junk I had in high college. Now that I live in a state with a legal cannabis market, I see a lot of hybrid strains that are derived from OG Kush. The famous hybrid strain Girl Scout Cookies was made from crossing OG Kush with Durban Poison, while Bubba Kush a cross with Hindu Kush & OG Kush. It’s hard to find a nice crop of OG Kush in my state because a lot of growers will pass off an inferior cultivar as OG Kush when it doesn’t reflect the taste profile & effects of the OG Kush I got when I lived in CA for a few years in the early 2000s. You guess you’ve got real OG Kush when you open the tin & smell the rich, wet aroma of the flower buds.

Hopefully I can keep getting more landrace cannabis strains moving into the future

Smoking cannabis was different than it was. A lot of the best weed back then came from overseas. You’d find Thai sticks in southeast Asia, kushes in northern India, Pakistan, & Afghanistan, & Gold-bud in North & South America. These “landrace” strains are either pure sativas or pure indicas & were used to develop the honestly first hybrid strains of cannabis. While I have found new phenotypes of indicas care about Pakistani Kush, Hindu Kush, & Afghani Kush to be weak & unappealing, landrace sativas care about Durban Poison & Hawaiian are phenomenal. While many medical weed stores carry Durban Poison on a correct basis, it isn’t consistently easy finding other quality landrace sativa strains. When my local cannabis dispensary started stocking Acapulco Gold & Columbian Gold recently, I was excited to try them both. Opening the tin of each was a satisfying experience. The dank odor of the flower buds was both fruity & wet at the same time, which I’ve been missing from some of these ridiculous hybrids that are trending right now. I’ll take a blend if I can be sure that it will give me great nice effects. But more often than not, I’m disappointed by these muffled hybrids. My body is left wanting more. Hopefully I can keep getting more landrace cannabis strains moving into the future. I saw many on moneus when I lived in CA briefly, however the state I’m living in now is limited in its options of cannabis products by comparison. As long as I can keep getting Colombian Gold & Acapulco Gold, I’ll be ecstatic.

Finding mature seeds

My mom and dad have told me many tales about getting cannabis in the 1970s.

Until the ‘70s, there was no such thing as “sensimilla,” which is a title used to describe unpollinated female cannabis plants.

These unpollinated ladies would produce flower buds free of seeds & would thus yield stronger effects. The energy once used to make seeds can go into trichome production instead. But before sensimilla became famous nationwide, the batches of cannabis coming from all over the world had lots of stems & seeds in them. Columbian Gold & Acapulco Gold actually had a gold tint to them & long, thin leaves like you’d expect from a pure sativa. Nowadays most legal cannabis is grown indoors so it’s a lot easier to produce batches of sensimilla without any seeds. Alas, this isn’t consistently the case as I have gained a few disappointing batches of cannabis flower products in this state that were filled with immature seeds. If I’m going to find a seed in a premium cannabis product, I want it to at least be a mature seed that I can save for home cultivation. Sadly, the last few times I found seeds they were far from being viable for growing. Even if you whine to the dispensary, the best thing they will do is supply you 10% off your next order. If you can’t trust the new product will be any better, why bother taking their discount in the first location? Getting an older seed for a change would be cool, although I doubt I’ll ever be that lucky. At least supply me sensimilla if those are the kind of prices you’re going to charge. That’s at least what I expect from a reputable cannabis dispensary in a legal state.
